About Your Tutor

Mini-Biography

I was raised in Bellingham, WA, and after completing a B.A. in Geography from Western Washington University, I spent 14 years in Tucson, Arizona. I began studying Gaelic in 1993 when I took Muriel Fisher's Gaelic class at Pima Community College. Muriel is a native speaker from the Isle of Skye. I saw the listing for her Continuing Education class in the local community college bulletin, and as I have much Scottish and Irish ancestry, I thought it would be an interesting and fun class to take.

Following the Pima class, I took private lessons with Muriel, and eventually seven semesters of Gaelic at the University of Arizona's, Critical Languages Program. In addition, I took seven weeks of short courses at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic medium college on the Isle of Skye. I completed An Cùrsa Inntrigidh, and An Cùrsa Adhartais, also from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. I have been to Scotland many times – sometimes for the language and others for tours.

I have been teaching Gaelic and the history of Scotland and Ireland for more than 10 years.

Land acknowledgement

I acknowledge that we live on the unceded lands of the Coast Salish People, such as the
Duwamish, whose ancestors resided here since time immemorial and whose descendants are with us today, honoring and bringing to life their ancient heritage.
